Understanding the Three Doshas

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, holds that every person is born with a unique combination of three biological energies called doshas — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Your individual ratio of these doshas, known as your prakriti (birth constitution), shapes your physiology, personality, digestion, and susceptibility to disease. Knowing your dosha is the starting point for making food, exercise, and lifestyle choices that bring you into balance.

Prakriti vs Vikriti

Your prakriti is your inherent constitution set at birth. Your vikriti is your current state, which can drift due to stress, season, or diet. This quiz assesses your baseline prakriti. If your current symptoms feel very different from your results, you may be experiencing a dosha imbalance worth exploring with an Ayurvedic practitioner.

Vata

Air & Space

Vata is associated with movement, creativity, and communication. Vata-dominant people tend to be quick, enthusiastic, and adaptable, but can become scattered, anxious, or depleted when out of balance.

Pitta

Fire & Water

Pitta governs metabolism, digestion, and transformation. Pitta-dominant people are sharp, decisive, and goal-oriented. When in balance, they are warm leaders and visionaries; when excess, they may become irritable or perfectionistic.

Kapha

Earth & Water

Kapha provides stability, strength, and nourishment. Kapha-dominant people are loyal, calm, and resilient. When in balance they are grounding forces; when excess, they may experience sluggishness, weight gain, or attachment.

How Ayurvedic Diet Differs From Conventional Nutrition

Conventional nutrition focuses primarily on macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, fat) and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals). Ayurvedic nutrition adds a deeper layer: the qualities of food — heavy or light, hot or cold, oily or dry — and how those qualities interact with your dosha. For example, a Vata person thrives on warm, oily, grounding foods while those same foods might aggravate Kapha, who benefits from light, dry, stimulating meals. This is why a one-size-fits-all diet often fails — what fuels one person may drain another.

The Role of Spices in Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, spices are considered medicine. Turmeric reduces inflammation across all doshas. Ginger kindles digestive fire (agni) and is warming, making it excellent for Vata and Kapha. Fennel and coriander cool excess Pitta heat. Black pepper stimulates metabolism and benefits sluggish Kapha digestion. Including dosha-appropriate spices in daily cooking is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to begin an Ayurvedic practice. Unlike pharmaceutical supplements, culinary spices are food-safe, affordable, and have been used safely for thousands of years. Always track how you feel — your body is the best guide. Frequently Asked Questions

01

What are the three Ayurvedic doshas?

The three doshas are Vata (Air & Space), Pitta (Fire & Water), and Kapha (Earth & Water). Each dosha governs different physiological and psychological functions. Vata controls movement and the nervous system, Pitta governs metabolism and transformation, and Kapha provides structure, stability, and immunity. Most people have a dominant primary dosha with a secondary influence.

02

Can I have more than one dominant dosha?

Yes. Many people are dual-dosha types, such as Vata-Pitta or Pitta-Kapha. This means two doshas score closely and both significantly shape your constitution (prakriti). True tri-doshic individuals — equally balanced across all three — are rare. Your quiz results will show both a primary and secondary dosha when relevant.

03

How accurate is this quiz?

This quiz is a solid starting point based on classical Ayurvedic texts. Traditional Ayurvedic assessment (prakriti analysis) involves a practitioner examining pulse, tongue, eyes, and lifestyle in detail. This quiz captures the most diagnostically useful physical and psychological markers from that tradition. Use your results as a guide, not a medical diagnosis.

04

Can my dosha change over time?

Your prakriti (birth constitution) remains relatively fixed. However, your vikriti (current imbalance state) can shift based on diet, season, stress, age, and lifestyle. For example, someone with a Kapha constitution might show Vata imbalance symptoms during a stressful period. Revisiting the quiz during different life seasons can be informative.

05

Is Ayurvedic nutrition backed by science?

Ayurveda is a 5,000-year-old system of traditional medicine. While modern clinical research on specific Ayurvedic dietary principles is still growing, many recommendations align with evidence-based nutrition — such as emphasising whole foods, cooking with anti-inflammatory spices like turmeric and ginger, and eating in rhythm with circadian patterns. Always consult a healthcare provider for medical conditions.

06

What spices are best for balancing my dosha?

Each dosha has signature spices. Vata benefits from warming spices like ginger, cinnamon, and cardamom. Pitta benefits from cooling, anti-inflammatory spices like coriander, fennel, and mint. Kapha benefits from stimulating spices like black pepper, mustard seeds, and cayenne that kindle digestive fire. Your results include a personalised spice list.
